Shelburne Street at McRae Avenue, Saanich, BC
Browning Gyro Park is one of those gems you could easily drive past without noticing, tucked alongside Shelburne Street and best spotted from a bike. We stumbled across it on a family ride, and the kids immediately wanted to stop. Glad we did.
The Playground
This is a well-equipped playground that caters beautifully to a wide range of ages. The standout feature is a large climbable frog, instantly beloved by both our girls and every other child there. Beyond that, there are two climbing towers, one suited to toddlers and one to older kids. A mock climbing wall adds another challenge for adventurous kids, connected by a rope bridge that kept everyone entertained for a good while.
The swings are a highlight too; there’s a good selection, including options suitable for children with disabilities and toddler swings alongside standard ones. It’s one of the more inclusive playgrounds we’ve visited in the area.
One Important Safety Note
The park sits directly alongside a bike lane (awesome!) on Shelburne Street. While a wooden fence runs along that edge to create a barrier, it isn’t fully enclosed, so it’s worth keeping an eye on little ones near that side of the park. That said, the trees do a surprisingly good job of buffering both the noise and the feeling of being close to a busy road.
The Setting
Beyond the playground, there’s a basketball court and generous grassy areas for kicking a ball around or just relaxing in the sun. The Bowker Creek Greenway runs through the park, making it a lovely spot for a wander. There’s also a naturescape area — planted with native plants to support local wildlife like birds and butterflies — which adds a lovely natural touch.
Picnic tables and a bench mean you can settle in for a proper visit.
Amenities
No washrooms or water fountain on site, so come prepared. Dogs are welcome on leash.
Nearby
This is where Browning Gyro Park is great as a destination. The local amenities on Shelburne Street are excellent. Bulk Barn is right there for snacks, and there’s a library close by, too. It’s a great neighbourhood to explore before or after your visit.
Our Verdict
Browning Gyro Park is a fantastic find, well-equipped, inclusive, and full of character. The climbable frog alone is worth the visit. Just be mindful of the road, bike lane alongside the park and come with water and snacks since there are no facilities on site. A hidden gem that deserves to be better known.
