Mount Douglas Park, Cordova Bay Road, Saanich, BC
PKOLS, known to many as Mount Douglas Park, is one of Greater Victoria’s most beloved natural spaces, and the playground tucked away at the end of the parking lot is a lovely bonus for families making the trip. This is the kind of place you come for the hiking and the views, and then let the kids loose on the playground for a well-earned picnic afterwards.
The Playground
The playground itself is charming and serene. Equipment includes a combined climbing frame catering to both younger and older children, a Jeep with steering wheels, swings for babies and toddlers, older children, and those requiring extra support, a rocker for young children, and a couple of metal climbing frames. It’s a solid, inclusive setup that covers all ages well. As a bonus, there’s a fantastic tree right beside the playground that kids absolutely love to climb, and it’s a big hit.
While you’re in the playground, you can catch glimpses of the ocean through the trees. It adds a beautiful, calming backdrop to the whole visit.
The Setting
The wider park is stunning. Hiking trails wind through the forest and up to the summit of Mount Douglas, offering sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the San Juan Islands. Note that bikes are not permitted on the trails. The beach and ocean sit just below the parking lot, making this a genuinely special family destination.
Back at the playground level there’s a grassy field, a batting area, and picnic benches, perfect for settling in after a hike. The whole area has a quiet, tucked-away feel that’s hard to find elsewhere in Saanich.
Amenities
Washrooms are available at the entrance as you drive or cycle in. No water fountain at the playground itself, so bring your own. Parking is free. Dogs are welcome throughout the park, but not within the playground area.
Nearby
There isn’t much in the way of food or snacks immediately nearby, so come prepared. That said, there’s a coffee shop around 5 minutes away that’s well worth the short drive, a perfect reward after a hike to the top.
Our Verdict
PKOLS is one of the most beautiful settings for a playground visit you’ll find in Greater Victoria. The playground itself is well equipped and inclusive, but the real draw is everything around it: the trails, the ocean views, the climbing tree, and that wonderful sense of being somewhere truly special. Come for the hike, stay for the playground, and don’t forget your snacks.
