Gordonhead Recreation Centre, Saanich, BC

Gordonhead Recreation Centre is one of Greater Victoria’s busiest recreation hubs, and on a sunny Saturday in spring, it shows: baseball games in full swing, cyclists passing through, and families making the most of everything on offer. The playground, however, is a little surprising given the scale of everything around it.

The Playground

For a facility as well-resourced as Gordonhead Recreation Centre, the playground is on the modest side. Equipment includes a Jeep with two steering wheels (always a hit with young siblings), a small climbing frame with slide, two baby and toddler swings, and two swings for older children. The setup is simple, and it gets the job done, but don’t come expecting something spectacular.

There’s also a mild safety consideration worth noting — the playground sits fairly close to the road within the complex. It’s not alarming, but worth being aware of with younger children.

The Setting

This is where Lambrick Park redeems itself. The wider grounds are genuinely lovely, grassy areas perfect for spreading out a blanket and reading a book, and a picnic bench for snacks. Gordonhead Recreation Centre itself is excellent, with a pool, fitness facilities, baseball diamonds, a skate park, fields for open play, and a small enclosed off-leash dog park. There’s genuinely something for everyone in the family here.

Amenities

Washrooms are available inside the recreation centre, a comfortable 2 to 3 minute walk along safe paths from the playground. There is also a concession stand on site, though it’s tied to the baseball operations; availability depends on whether a game is on. On a Saturday in spring it was busy and well worth a visit, but don’t count on it being open every day.

Our Verdict

Gordonhead Recreation Centre is a fantastic family destination with plenty to keep everyone busy. The playground itself, though, is underwhelming for a facility of this size and wouldn’t justify a special trip on its own. If it’s a playground you’re after, Sierra Park is just around the corner and offers considerably more for kids of all ages.
