Sierra Park is a large, open neighbourhood park in the Gordonhead area of Saanich, and if you live nearby, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again.
The Playground
The playground itself caters well to a wide age range. Younger kids gravitate toward the sandpit with its digger, a guaranteed hit for toddlers who want to get their hands dirty. Older kids meanwhile head straight for the hockey net and basketball hoop on the concrete court, which sees plenty of action.
There’s also a tennis court on site, popular with all ages. Worth noting: pickleball occasionally breaks out here, though a sign makes clear it isn’t officially permitted.
The Park
Beyond the playground, Sierra Park has generous open grass space, ideal for a kickaround, a game of soccer, or just spreading out a blanket on a sunny afternoon. Dogs are welcome off-leash, so expect a friendly mix of families and dog walkers.
The park is not fenced, but its size means there’s plenty of natural buffer. Just keep an eye on little ones near the edges.
Amenities
There are no washrooms on site, so plan accordingly. There is a water fountain available. If you need a coffee or a snack, there’s a café just at the end of San Juan Ave on the corner, very handy.
Nearby
There are two beaches within easy reach, either a 10 minute walk or a few minutes by car. Combining a playground visit with a beach stop makes for a perfect Saanich afternoon.
Our Verdict
Sierra Park is a solid neighbourhood park that works well for families with kids of all ages. It won’t blow you away, but it delivers exactly what a good local park should, space, variety, and that café around the corner seals the deal.
