The Playground
Don’t let the size of the playground fool you; this park packs a lot in! The standout feature is a popular Jeep complete with two steering wheels (at least for my two-year-old), meaning two kids can drive at the same time. A guaranteed hit. Beyond that, you’ll find the usual climbing frames and swings, catering well to both toddlers and older kids. It’s compact, but thoughtfully done.
The Setting
The real bonus here is the lake. Prospect Lake sits right alongside the park, adding a beautiful natural backdrop to your visit. That said, the lake is at a reasonable distance from the playground, so while there’s no immediate safety concern, it’s worth keeping a close eye on little ones, especially if yours are prone to wandering.
There are plenty of benches positioned so you can sit comfortably and watch the kids without losing sight of them, a small but very welcome detail. Picnic benches make this an ideal spot for a snack break, too.
Amenities
Parking is available on the main road and at the side of the park. The side parking is the better option for families, and it’s much safer for kids getting in and out of the car.
Nearby
This is where a visit to Whitehead Park becomes a really great day out. If you have a canoe or kayak, Prospect Lake is a lovely paddle. Combine the playground with a paddle and a little walk around the lake, and you’ve got a full afternoon sorted with happy kids.
On the way, stop in at the coffee shop that also stocks food, muffins, and a selection of imported goods; it’s well worth it. Not far away is Bicycle Pizza, which appears to open on weekends only. We visited on a weekday, so we haven’t tried it yet, but it looks like a really neat spot and is firmly on the list for next time.
Our Verdict
Whitehead Park is a charming little park that offers more than its size suggests. The lake setting, the Jeep with two steering wheels, and the excellent nearby options make this one of Saanich’s hidden gems. Combine it with a paddle and a coffee stop, and you’ve got a perfect Victoria family afternoon.
